Stewards rivals fast in training

By

J. J. BOYLE

Silver Wraith and Diplomante, rival candidates for the second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow, showed some of their sprinting prowess in solo gallops at Riccarton yesterday. Silver Wraith sprinted on the sand in the hands of the light-weight “Baz” Dowling. He could only be timed on the markers used for the adjoining inside grass track and he was travelling over a little more than the true distance yet he came up with 36.85, and did the job in style. Earlier Diplomante sped over 800 m on the outside of the course proper in 47.45. It was a dashing effort by the Foxton-trained first-day sprint winner; Noble Heights, favourite

for the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas, did striding work on the sand with her stablemate, Innes Lad, before running in from the 600 m in 425. Despa and Indian Lass did their final Cup trial on the plough, a strongly-run 1600 m in Imin 42.25. the last 600 m in 37.65. Tap Again and Disraeli hurried over 1400 m in Imin 275, the final 600 m in 36.65. Star Order ran 1400 m on the outside of the course proper with Fulla Cheer in Imin 31.25, but Aramis was restricted to Imin 37.45. The Tauranga trainer, Del Roberts, would have been satisfied with three-quarter pace from El Questro from the 1400 m to the 600 m, but his New Zealand Cup hopeful went slightly faster at all

stages and finished in Imin 34.25, bowling into his work with the enthusiasm of a stayer at a high peak of fitness. The Winton-trained Gay Warrior, a light-weight in the Cup, led River Lad throughout 800 m and finished the task in the smart time of 495. Beaufort Lass, favourite for the Welcome Stakes, was going easily with a short lead over Clansman ending 800 m in 49.85. This effort was equalled later by Pash and Reveillia, two more North Island youngsters in the Welcome Stakes. Mr Ay Bee went about his work with a will to finish 800 m in 48.45. Of the short sprints on the plough, Magellan’s 600 m in 365, and 800 m in 48s from The Chairman and Foam were noteworthy.
