H’cote looks at civic award

A civic award scheme is being investigated by the Heathcote County Council. Such an award would recognise a person who had helped his fellow man locally, Cr O. T. Alpers told the council's finance and administrative committee last evening. “Many people fail to ga'.n recognition in things such as the - Queen’s Birthday Honours but they deserve praise,” he said. It was suggested that a selection panel could comprise the County Chairman, the past chairrrian, and representatives of the ratepayers’ association. Cr M. J. Taylor said the award could be. restricted to one or two persons a year. The Lower Hutt City Council has a civil honours award scheme and any person who has performed' meritorious

voluntary service in the city is eligible. In Lower Hutt the award is a silver medallion, lapel badge, or brooch, and a scroll is presented to each recipient at a civic ceremony. The finance and administrative committee will consider the scheme in detail in February. Library grant St Martins Public Library will receive a $lOO grant from the County Council. The library, which has served the community for 54 years, covers part of Heathcote County. More than a quarter of the library’s members are Heathcote ratepayers. The money will help buy books. The library has 802 members and is run by volunteer staff.
