Refuse meeting draws criticism
‘■Total confusion for the already confused over a completely confused issue” was the description by a Christchurch City councillor, Ms Vicki Buck, of an “urgent” meeting held last evening to discuss the metropolitan refuse scheme’s progress and future. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay) made his unwillingness to take part in the meeting apparent. The chairman of the Waimairi County Council, and chairman of last evening’s meeting. Mr D. B. Rich,
made his unwillingness to let the Christchurch City coun- ' cillors speak at the meeting equally well known. Cr Buck moved one motion and was forbidden to move another through the chairman’s use of “procedural motion.” Cr Buck said later that she intended to find out what that was. As a counter-measure, Cr Buck asked Cr Stanley to put the motions on her behalf. Cr Buck said, she was against the chairman’s suggestion that three transfer stations were still needed for Christchurch.
“Three stations may not be a good idea. We could be buying ourselves a whole lot of problems.” she said. As far as the Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr H. W. Cumberland) is concerned Kaiapoi will withdraw. At the end of the two hours of discussion, a motion that the councils proceed with the basic three elements of the scheme — a northern transfer station, an eastern transfer station, and landfill, was put by the chairman. The motion was carried.
