Relics stolen
The Italian police have set up roadblocks around Venice after two youths burst into the Jeremiah Church and stole relics of the fourthcentury virgin martyr, St Lucy. As the parish priest was about to close the church for the night one of the youths threatened him with a weapon while the other broke open the crystal reliquary at St Lucy’s alter and shoved the relics into a bag. In the haste of the getaway, the saint’s skull and a silver death mask fell to the floor and were left behind. St Lucy was martyred about the year 304 in Syracuse, Sicily. — Venice.
