National basketball final

The National Basketball League final will be between Drake Personnel-Waitemata and Hamilton on the latter team’s home court, it was announced yesterday. The final of the Countrywide Building Society-spon-sored tournament will be at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, the New Zealand Basketball Federation’s executive officer, Mr Joe McLeod, announced in Christchurch yesterday.

There had been some doubt over Waitemata’s eligibility for the final, which hinged on a protested match between it and Del Jay Cen-trals-Wellington, on October 31. Mr McLeod said yesterday that the protest — that revolved round a disputed amount of playing time in the match — had not been upheld and Waitemata would be the other finalist. Waitemata and Palmerston North both finished the league with 12 points, but Waitemata had a superior points average.

The irony of Sunday’s final for Canterbury, which finished fifth in the six team league, is that it beat Waitemata by four points at Cowies Stadium and lost to Hamilton by only three points, at home.
