Smelter talks today
PA Invercargill The Tiwai Point aluminium smelter dispute remained static at the weekend as the parties awaited a meeting with an industrial mediator. The mediator, Mr Walter Grills, will meet smelter management and union representatives today to help resolve two outstanding award claims: extra leave relating to statutory holiday
shifts, and a special working conditions allowance for about 30 workers. Conditions stipulated by Mr Grills last week before a meeting could take place — the cancellation of warning or dismissal notices and the resumption of normal work at the plant — have been complied with. The management manned essential smelter work during rolling stoppages for six days last week.
