Labour pledges to protect point
PA Auckland A Labour government would stop the development of Bastion Point for housing, according to the party’s president, Mr J. P. Anderton. He told Maori protesters in Auckland on Saturday that Labour would stop the development and sale of land, and would also stop the building and sale of housing at Bastion Point. ■ “It is offensive to the Maori people as well as to the people of Auckland for the Government, through the Housing Corporation, to sell land and housing at Bastion
Point to the highest bidder,” Mr Anderton said. Labour is committed to investigating and negotiating the return to the Maori people of all Maori land no longer used as originally intended by the Crown. Hundreds ; of people marched to Bastion Point on Saturday in protest against the proposed sale of 1.8 . hectares by the Housing Corporation. The corporation has prepared the land for sale to private interests. The march was organised by the Joint Working Group on Bastion Point, which says the subdivision is for highcost housing.
