Shirley, Fendalton share women’s competition lead

With an accumulation of seven points each after the first day’s play, Shirley, and Fendalton share the early lead in the women’s section of the B.N.Z. inter-club tennis competion: Matches were played in fine weather at Wilding Park on Saturday and some close and exciting contests were conducted. Shirley defeated Avonside, winning three of the four singles matches. Julianne Taylor recovered well after dropping the first set in her match, with Judy Phillips to win, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Jane Clarke easily disposed of Rhonda Pearce, but Jill Hibbert had to really fight to beat a tenacious Dianna McKinnel. Carol Pearce salvaged something for Avonside by winning her singles match with Trish Grace, shortly after partnering McKinnel in an easy doubles victory.-
