Packers’ pay rise

PA Auckland • Freight-forwarders’ employees have received a 10 per cent wage rise under an award negotiated in Auckland. Members of the Auckland and Canterbury storemen and packers' unions sought a wage rise of 22 per. cent. Their bid for a 35-hour week was also unsuccessful. The unions’ secretary, Mr M. C. Jackson, said that gains of 10 per cent were also made in allowances for service, handling chemicals

and for clothing, which

meant an 11.6 per cent rise overall. He said the union had resisted strong pressure from the employers to change the

redundancy agreement. Any employer still had to reach agreement with the union before laying off staff. Mr Jackson said this applied to the Mogal Corporation which at one stage' during the dispute threatened to close its Southdown depot where 60 workers are employed.
