UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY CERTIFICATE OF LIBERAL STUDIES IN 1982, THE UNIVERSITY will again be offering a course of study leading to the Certificate of Liberal Studies. The purpose of the course is to bring into the University mature persons who wish to illuminate their experiences in life by academic study. It is expected that most applicants will be above the age of twenty-five. Although formal entrance qualifications are not required, the standard of work expected from students will be comparable to that required in regular first-year University classes. The course has been planned to cater for those who already have vocational or domestic responsibilities, and each entrant will be encouraged to undertake a study programme appropriate to his or her time resources. The average time for completion of the full Certificate course has been three years. Classes will be conducted in the following: Literature (Fiction), Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Environmental Studies, History, Geography, Law, Science, the English Language, Sociology, Greek Literature in Translation and Education. About half the classes, which are usually of one hour’s duration, will be held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and the remainder will be in the late afternoon or early evening.
