DESPITE a disappointingly small response for its $l5OO tournament last week-end, the Linwood Bowling Club intends to push ahead with its plans for an open tournament next March. All that has to be settled is the sponsorship, which is expected to be in excess of the limit set for purely amateur events. This tournament seems likely to be the first open one in Christchurch, although the Blenheim club, which has already had an open tournament for earlier next year approved, looks set to be the South Island trend-setter. MARBELLA SKY, one of England’s most promising young greyhounds, has been stolen from the kennels of trainer Ray Andrews at Manchester. Marbella Sky won the Scottish Derby in August and was runner-up in the Edinburgh Cup.. Andrews offered $2200 reward for. information leading to the 20-month-old dog’s return. SAM LE COMPTE and Ivan Sutherland, the two men largely responsible for the resurgence of the Wairau Rowing Club, have put aside their oars. Both the former internationals have instead turned their attention to coaching with Sutherland looking after the Wairau premiers and Le Compte the novices this rowing season. Last season, Wairau made a bold bid for its first national champion eights title, finishing a close second behind the vaunted Waikato crew, and the Blenheim-based club showed some depth, too, by taking the novice eights for the second successive year. This season, Wairau is down to six premiers, but Sutherland expects to boat a good four. ? • . . .BACK IN MARCH, 1980, the illustrious combination of Sutherland and Le Compte gave Blenheim its biggest sporting thrill since Marlborough lifted the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury in 1973. They took the premier coxed and coxless pairs double in the nationals at Lake Horowhenua, giving Wairau its first "red coat” titles since 1954. Coincidentally, it had been Sutherland’s eldest brother, Ramon, who captained the rugby team to its shock victory. IVAN SUTHERLAND, aged 31, was a regular member of New Zealand crews from 1974 to 1980 and his successes included two eights bronze medals — at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the 1978 Lake Karapiro world championships — and a silver medal in the coxless fours in the 1977 world regatta at Amsterdam. He also picked up eight “red coats” with three different clubs, Avon (5), Wairau (2), and Waikato. Le Compte has won three “red coats” and the chunky little rower also stroked the New Zealand coxless four to seventh place in the 1978 world event.
