All Avonside table tennis

Canterbury’s winter interclub table tennis champion. Avonside I, will field two of its winning line-up for the summer A grade competitions which begins on Wednesday.

Michael Burrowes and Bill Scott, ranked sixth and ninth in the province respectively, will combine to make their team favourites for the 198182 title. The third member and captain will be the highly-competitive Bert Thompson.

The 10-team summer competition has an A reserve look about it with the absence of six of Canterbury’s top ten men players. Not surprisingly, the teams will divide into premier and premier reserve draws after the initial nine rounds. The cornerstone of Avonside I’s winter success, Maurice Burrowes, has been

entered as a fourth player for Avonside H. How seriously the team challenge its No 1 counterparts will depend bn how many appearances the top Canterbury man decides to make.

Avonside Il’s other players are the former national coach. Trevor Flint, and the promising juniors, Lyndon White and Tim Hanrahan. Avonside also has third and fourth combinations that will add depth to the competition. Appearing for Avonside 111 will be the experienced pair of Brian Wilson and Glen Haszard. plus the thirdranked Canterbury under-17 girl. Jackie Cotter. Avonside IV will be skippered by Kath Thomspon, with support from Graham Ripley and John Yang. Looking to topple the Avonside applecart will be

two teams each from the Riccarton and Linwood clubs.

Riccarton I has the consistent pair of Colin Tipper and Tony Sargent, while the No 2 team centres on the Canterbury coach, Graham Lamb, and a top junior, Monique Van De Aa.

Linwood I could be the dark horse of the field, with a former top Canterbury junior, Kevin Duffy, returning to senior competition. The side will also have the provincial representatives, Michael Prisk and Pam Shadbolt, on call.

The other entrants are Linwood 11, with Reg Oakley, Dallington, led by the veteran Bob Loudon, and Burnside, with the up-and-coming Grant McCarroll. Alistair Arrnstron
