New race broadcast service

PA Auckland New Pacific Radio plans to begin broadcasting race meetings on November 21. The station has received approval in principle for live broadcasts from the New Zealand Racing Conference. The approval, expected to be ratified by the conference on November 19, is for three years.

The conference promotions officer, Mr Russell Collins,’ said that “only one or two formalities” remain to be settled before the station can take live broadcasts. Mr Collins said Radio New Zealand told the conference a year ago it was . prepared to waive its exclusive rights to live racing commentaries. In the meantime, he added, New Pacific Radio — formerly known as Radio Pacific — had carried live greyhound racing commentaries and main Australian races “with a marked degree of expertise.” The station’s programme director, Mr Jim Smith, has confirmed that the station hopes to launch live commentaries at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting on November 21.
