Signs to be replaced

Warning sighs erected by Woodend residents near “Butcher’s Corner” will be replaced by official Automobile Association .signs, according to the member of Parliament for Rangiora. Mr D. F. Quigley (Nat.). Mr Quigley met yesterday afternoon the District Commissioner of the Ministry of Works and the district-high-ways engineer.

He said later that the signs warning motorists of the potentially hazardous corner would remain until "oversized, advisory speed signs” were erected.

“I would hope that these will go up next week,” Mr Quigley said. “The Automobile Association is making them at present.”

At the same time, two black-and-white reflective boards would be placed on

the roadside at the corner to warn motorists of the bend. T,hese would be visible from both directions. "In addition, work will be carried out this financial year on reshaping the road at the curve, installing curbing on the east side of the road, and putting in two traffic islands on the W’oodend Road,” he said.

It was hoped that this work would be begun before Christmas, he said.

Mr Quigley said that the 50 km/h sign at the north end of the Woodend township was likely to be moved further north by about 100 metres, to make people slow down sooner.

A proper pedestrian crossing would almost certainly be put in near the school. There was also a plan to improve safety at the Woodend Hotel corner.
