Youthful Magellan may be too fast

By J. J. BOYLE The youthful brilliance of Magellan could be the stumbling block for the best the other sprinters can muster in the Blooms Plate Handicap, first leg of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

Magellan is four, and his programme this season has embraced four starts, which have yielded two wins, a second and a fourth. Success eluded him in two starts in Southland earlier in the month, but a respectable second behind one as talented as The Dimple will command much respect. Magellan has 50kg, which places him 3kg above the minimum and 5.5 kg below the top weight, Hi Roona, one of three nine-year-olds in the field. Hi Roona has not won in two starts this season, but he has four last-start winners — Spy. Force, Maunday Money, Sovereign Charles, and Black Rule — below him in the handicap. The Hastings sprinter, Kanga’s Lad. went within inches of a win last time out, and with a better run at Masterton he would have turned that, second into victory.

Indigod lengthens a sizeable list of form prospects, and Peligro, even without recent racing, will command respect from down in the weights. Blue Sage and Ay Em are expected to spearhead a challenge by Riccartontrained hopefuls for the Banks Peninsula Cup, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Blue Sage won the corresponding race two years ago and goes into this one with thirds from.her last two starts.

Ay Em was a last-start second at Orari, and his conqueror, John Peel, put more bloom on that form by going on to win the North Canterbury Cup, in which Blue. Sage, finished third.
