Bread not so dear
According to the Bread Information Centre, New Zealand Association of Bakers,‘in terms of wages bread prices today are the same as those of 10 years ago.
In a statement issued last week the centre said that the price of a loaf of bread relative to ordinary-time wages was still virtually the -same as it was ,10 years ago, which was a pretty good record for both the industry and the consumer. In 1972 bread at 18 to 19c for a sliced, wrapped 750gram loaf was costing people 0.25 per cent of the average ordinary-time wage, which was then $60.67. That ratio was still unchanged in May, 1981, with bread at 65c to 68c and wages at $226.50.
