Westland lambs win again

For the third year in succession the Hill Brothers, of Ngahere on the West Coast, have won the best lamb draft competition held by the Glendarren Trading Company. Ltd. . The competition is open to drafts of not less than 150 lambs and this time the Hills’ winning draft comprised 151, which were drafted by B. Parsons, of Dalgetys at Greymouth. The lambs were out of Romney-

Border ewes by Romney or South Suffolk rams and averaged 17.95kg,' compared with last year's average of 17.8 kg. They" included 16 per cent of < the PM grade. 69 per cent PX, 2 per cent PH and 13 per cent PHH and there was, only one cutter lamb and no Omegas, fats. Alphas or fair average quality. The second prize went to W. H. Foster, of Omihi, for 523 lambs averaging 14.6 kg.

In third place was a draft of 323 lambs, averaging 15.21 kg. from A. R. and A. P. Harrison, of Amberley. In this case the lambs were drafted bv Gavin Beere. of N.C.F. Kaiapoi Ltd. and 93 per cent of these were in the PM. PX. OM and YM grades.

The general manager of Glendarren, Mr D. S. Sanderson. said that it was. difficult to sort out the place getters in this years competition because of the varying demands in the world markets, but particular notice had been taken of average weight, in conjunction with the size of the draft and percentage of medium' to heavy weight carcases, to the exclusion of “fat" grade, carcases.
