Rakaia River
Sir,—Your Saturday article repeated a misconception at present being expounded by the irrigation engineers of the Ministry of Works and. Development. The management plan adopted by the Regional Water Board in 1974 does not protect the water of the Rakaia River, “ rather it opens the door to a level of exploitation that would be opposed strongly, even by moderate conservation groups. Since 1974 major developments have occurred on or have been planned on other Canterbury rivers. The water management plan should be reviewed in recognition of the Rakaia’s position of being the least modified but most threatened of our remaining large rivers on the plains. As a major geographic form and natural habitat of New -Zealand, the Rakaia River would be a fine addition to our reserves system to show our commitment to the National Conservation Strategy that was announced with much fanfare during the I.U.C.N. conference this month.—Yours, etc.,
B. A. CALDER. October 27, 1981.
