Smiles back with pets

PA Rotorua A pet rooster named “Fluffy” and an assortment of rabbits, guinea pigs, and three budgies have brought smiles back to the faces of the children of Tawhiuau School, at Murupara. It took a lot of doing — the children were in deep gloom on Monday — after their school pets were slaughtered by a weekend intruder. One mother said: “Even on Tuesday it was terrible. The children were walking round with very long faces. Today it is amazing, just like Christmas come early.” The pets had been looked after by the 24 children in a special needs class, which, according to the principal, Mr R. Gerrand, had given the pupils’ progress a big boost. .

While the police are still looking for the culprits, who also stole the petty cash, Whakatane’s community radio station decided to help perk the children up, and an announcer, Mr P. Rowe, was surprised by the “terrific response” to his appeal for replacement pets. He and another announcer, Mr C. Gregory, collected the replacements from Kawerau, Edgecumbe, and other parts of the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
