Libyan forces move in Chad
NZPA-Reuter Paris French Troops in the Central African Republic were put on full alert yesterday after Libyan forces in neighbouring Chad staged manoeuvres around the Chadian capital, N’djamena, official French sources said. The Libyan troop movements coincided with the arrival in Chad earlier yesterday of Libya’s second-in-command, Major AbdelSalam Jalloud, they said. They did not know the
reason for the manoeuvres by the Libyan troops, based in Chad since they helped President Goukouni Oueddei’s troops defeat rebels last year. Chad and the Central African republic are former French colonies, and France maintains a military presence in the latter. The French official sources said reports from Chad indicated that a column, of Libyan light tanks and infantry had moved into N’djamena.
