Qantas loses $20M

NZPA Canberra Qantas Airways, Ltd, lost almost $2O million in 1980-81, mainly because of a serious industrial dispute in February-March, according to the airline’s annual report, tabled in the Australian Federal Parliament yesterday. Qantas said in the report that it would almost have broken even had it not been for the dispute. The 1980-81 year had been

the bleakest in international aviation history, international airlines collectively losing about SUS2IOO million. Qantas said, “The international airline industry expects that the current year will be even worse, with even higher losses. Traffic continues to decline on many major routes and growth is slow on others.” Qantas blamed its declining share of the total market on the Government’s delay in

giving it permission to compete on equal terms with other airlines flying into Australia. Qantas said that several of the 23 competing foreign airlines serving Australia had continued to discount fares and offer additional commissions in 1980-81. Air New Zealand lost $30.5 million in 1980-81. Its loss for 1981-82 is expected to be $9O million.
