More funds for training

PA Wellington The Government yesterday announced that $585,000 in additional funds had been made available to support the Young Persons Training Programme. The grant is extra to the $2.7 million allocation at the start of the year. That provision was made for a target of 5000 training places in the 1981-82 year, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) and the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington). However, in the first six months of the year, 3000 young people had entered training — 2300 in technical institute based courses and 700 in training provided by employers in the work place. “To sustain this much higher level of activity the Government has reassessed the level of funding required for the Young Persons Training Programme." Mr Bolger said.

The extra would provide for up to 4200 institute-based training places and 1500 work-based training places for the year.
