Schoolgirl falls down bluff on headland

A schoolgirl was injured when she fell down a bluff on Godley Head, at the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour, about 1 p.m. yesterday. The girl, Cassandra Hill, aged 11, was on a scenic walk with a party of 32 other Form 1 pupils from the Woolston School, accompanied by two teachers and three parents.

She had fallen about five or six metres, said a spokesman for the school, but had been lifted back on to the track by the time the police and St John ambulancemen arrived.

The girl suffered cuts, bruising, shock, and a suspected broken arm. She was taken to Christchurch Hospital and admitted for observation.

The place where the accident occurred is some distance from Whitewash Head,

where the Christchurch City Council had planned to build a cliff-top safety fence. The idea was scrapped after local residents had complained that such a fence was not needed and would spoil the view.
