Canty’s shield challenge
Canterbury has been given a Ranfurly Shield challenge next winter. It has been set down for September 18, which means that it is to-. wards the end of the seven challenges that the holder, Wellington, has accepted. The Wellington union decided earlier this week on its shield programme for 1982 — 13 unions applied for challenges — but it will not be
announcing the list until today. However, the Canterbury union received notification yesterday that its application had been successful. Canterbury played for the Ranfurly Shield last winter, the province’s first shield game in eight years. It lost, 7-14, to Waikato, which subsequently lost the shield to Wellington in the final defence of the season.
