Venice flooded
Warning sirens wailed repeatedly over Venice as high tides flooded most of the lagoon city for a second day. A storm that battered the Italian peninsula with high winds sent seawater spilling into majestic palaces, churches, and ordinary houses. Municipal authorities said the situation was grave. Officials said the flooding caused damage initially estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars. The water reached more than a metre above sea level, but below the level of the disastrous deluge of 1966. Officials at the city office monitoring the tides said a new peak was expected today.-Venice.
