Goods train crashes near Wellington

PA Wellington A heavily laden goods train crashed into a passenger unit at Pukerua Bay last evening and it, in turn, was pushed into the rear of a second unit which was also halted at Muri Station, at the northern fringe of the suburb. Both units had been delayed at the station, 35km north of Wellington, by a signal fault. No-one was injured in the three-train crash.

The goods train driver was following an orange “slow,

proceed with caution” light about 7 p.m. when he spotted two passenger units stopped in front of him, according to a Railways source last evening. He was unable to stop in time and the goods engine ran into the rear of a unit to Paekakariki which then shunted into the rear of another unit also waiting to move north.

That unit suffered only minor damage and it and the first three carriages of the second unit were later driven from the scene without assistance.
