$4.7M for irrigation scheme

Parliamentary reporter

The Government has approved a $4.7 million irrigation scheme for the Waimea east irrigation district of the Waimea Plains near Nelson. Announcing the approval yesterday, the Minister of Works and Development (Mr W. L. Young), said $50,000 would be spent on construction before the end of the financial year. About 1200 ha would be served by the scheme.

Once completed, the project will make available to farmers not directly served by it, ground water now used by farmers who will be directly served by the scheme.

Water will be pumped from the Wairoa River and through a pressure-regulat-ing reservoir to a network of pipelines servicing the area. It will be supplied to farm boundaries all year round on a metered basis, and both trickle, and spray methods will be used. The scheme is intended to increase crop production and to allow conversion to crops of land now carrying stock. Mr Young said that most landholders in the irrigation district had voted in favour of the scheme earlier this year, and that local support had been strong.
