Workers out, but potline to continue
PA Invercargill Management and staff will man the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter’s potline for the second time this week while the workers meet in Invercargill this morning to discuss their award negotiations.
Union officials expect a larger proportion of the 850 workers under the award to attend the meeting. Four shifts earlier this week voted not to work over a breakdown in negotiations with the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters management. The stoppages lasted continuously from 4 p.m. on Sunday to midnight on Monday and the smelter management and staff were forced to institute contingency plans to keep the potlines working. A further disagreement in talks yesterday, however, suggested that Tuesday’s return to work might be shortlived. It is believed that union officials and the management’s assessors cannot find common ground on a union claim for extra leave for
workers required to work on statutory holidays, and another for a special conditions allowance for about 30 men involved in one particular job.
