Kidneys from accidents

From October next year British driving licences will carry a detachable portion allowing the holder to permit his kidneys and other organs to be removed in the event of fatal accident.

“I am sure this will be warmly welcomed by the public,” said the British Under-Secretary of State for Transport (Mr Kenneth Clarke).

“At the moment there are more than 2000 people waiting for kidney transplants in Britain.” Britain’s death toll on the roads was 8 per cent lower in the first six months of this year than in the corresponding period last year. Deaths were down to 1270 for the three months and serious injuries to 16,500, in spite of a 5 per cent rise in road traffic.

The British Department of Transport said the mild winter and heavy publicity against drinking and driving might have contributed to the improvement.
