Frugal car unveiled

NZPA London A small family car said to be even more economical than the Mini Metro has been unveiled at the annual Motor Show in London. Built by the Peugeot-Tal-bot-Citroen PSA group the Samba is said to achieve 21.7km/litre (61.4 m.p.g.) at a steady 90 km/h, about 14 per cent more than the British Leyland car. The Samba, a transverseengined front wheel drive car, has been developed to take a leading role in the future of Peugeot-Citroen-Talbot, Europe’s largest motor group. The motor fair — a see

and buy car show organised by British manufacturers and traders — was used to launch ’ several other new models, often refinements on existing cars. Peugeot introduced an economy gearbox which claimed fuel savings through the use of a fifth gear and Volkswagen displayed its 1982 range of “E” cars, said to be 30 per cent more fuel efficient. Among the sports cars on show are the Lotus Eclat Riviera with a detachable roof section, and the gullwinged De Lorean, built in Belfast for the American market, which will go on sale in Britain next year.
