Caning experiment
Sir.—lt was worth committing the sin of generalisation to inspire Ross Lindsay’s humorous comments (October 23). As he points out, not all victims of assault go on to assault others or deviate in any of the ways he suggests as a result of their experience. Ignoring the results, as Ross Lindsay obviously wishes to do, I am here objecting to caning as a form of assault, and a perverted one at that (whether video-taped or not). What Ross Lindsay. and his wife do as consenting adults (“I never beat my wife — well, not very often”) is their affair although my interest is aroused in a possible video-tape of “the obscene mating habits of left-footed toothbrushes.’’—Yours, etc., JO WYNNE. October 25, 1981.
