Board of trustees

The present board of the Hornby Licensing Trust includes’ the following people: Mr D. S. Goulding, chair-' man. Dave has been on the board almost continuously since 1962, apart from one brief period in 1966 when he did not stand for re-election due to business commitments. However, he stood in a by-election later that year and regained his seat. Dave is in his second period as chairman. He is well known in the Hornby area as a businessman and his interests apart from the trust are wide and varied. His services to the community were acknowledged in the 1980 New Year’s Honours List, with him being award the Q.S.M. Mr H. W. Bennett. Win has been a trustee since his first election in 1959 and was chairman when the hotel was opened, and has served many other terms as chairman. Win is retired and has spent much of his life involved with local bodies, serving long periods on the Hornby Community Council, Paparua County Council, the Town Hall Board of Control, the Canterbury Museum Board and. the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Win is the present South Island representative on the management committee of the New Zealand Licensing Trust Association.

Mr K. Chisholm. Keith is serving his second term on the board, winning a byelection in 1978 after having previously served between 1971 and 1977. A retired newsagent, Keith also follows the tradition of members of the trust, serving on the Hornby Town Council and. the Paparua County Council.

Mrs L. D. Keast. Lesley was elected to the trust in 1974 and, like many of her colleagues, has served on the Community Council and Paparua County Council. Lesley is employed by the Public Service Association and has a deep interest in welfare work. Mr D. N. Cornelius. Dave, who was first elected to the trust in 1977, is a purchasing officer for Crown Crystal Glass Co. and has had many years as an administrator with the Hornby Rugby League Club. Mr R. D. Ridden. Robin was appointed to the trust this year. A sales representative, he is also president of the Hornby Rugby Football Club. MANAGEMENT STAFF. General Manager. Mr B. J. Mackie was appointed in 1974 and has expertly guided the trust through some difficult periods to an organisa-

tion that is now a progressive and aggressive force in the hospitality industry in Christchurch. The new liquor supermarket can attribute much of its presence to Bert’s keen marketing sense and forethought. Bert is also well known as a South Island Maori Rugby selector and his contribution to Maori welfare and the welfare of young people has been immense.

Secretary. Mr C. J. Checketts was appointed in 1979, when the trust decided that it was necessary to have a full-time secretary.. Chris's interests mainly centre on rugby circles in which he is an active referee. At present, he is secretary of the South Island Regional Trusts Association and also has assisted the Department of Maori and Island Affairs in hostel administration.

Assistant Manager. Mr E. L. Sharp was appointed in December, 1974, and since that time has become quite an identity in the hotel and around Hornby. Ted will look with some envy at the staff of the new Liquorlands facilities that are spacious, with plenty of storage, and nice and warm, after he had to persevere in the old wholesale shop, which was primarily designed as a storage facility and lacked all mod cons, such as heating and carpet. Ted’s affable nature and long hours have made him known as a friend to many people not only in and around Hornby but from many parts of the world.
