Pay option for tour policemen
Parliamentary reporter The Cabinet had decided that policemen who had worked overtime during the Springbok tour would have a choice of leave or pay for the overtime, said the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) yesterday. The total cost of the payout would not be known until policemen had made their choice. If payment for overtime
was not an option, overtime leave would accumulate unduly. The decision to pay for overtime had nothing to do with maintaining adequate staff levels while policemen took leave. It appeared that many policemen would prefer to take leave. Asked if payments would reach millions of dollars, Mr Muldoon replied that they would not.
