Meat measure opposed

The North Canterbury province of Federated Farmers will ask political candidates in its area for their views on certain sections of the Meat Bill, which is before Parliament. . Speaking at a meeting of the meat and wool section's executive, Mr K. J. Coe (Ellesmere) said that farmers in his area were concerned about clause 37, in the bill, which would remove farmers’ rights to market offal from their sheep. “The bill is designed to delicense the freezing indus-

try but in fact it does the opposite with clause 37,” Mr Coe said. Carcases were dealt with on a competitive basis and offal should be also. Freezing companies had justified the clause by saying that returns for offal sold by them helped to pay for processing charges. Mr Coe said, “If farmers or farmer co-operatives were able to market the offal the return could be higher and more of the killing charges could be paid for.”
