Refugees drowned

NZPA-Reuter Miami At least 31 Haitian refugees drowned in Atlantic surf off Florida's east coast yesterday when their wooden sailing boat broke up in metre-high seas less than a kilometre from shore.

A Coast Guard spokesman said that 30 other Haitians, men and women, managed to swim ashore and were taken into custody by agents of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service. Four other survivors evaded policemen on the scene and were still being sought, the police said. Helicopters and boats of the Coast Guard, police and Florida Marine Patrol searched the disaster area of Hillsboro Beach, 12km north of Fort Lauderdale, for at least five people still missing.
