Meat talks resume

PA Wellington Negotiations resumed yesterday on the proposal by the Meatworkers’ Union for a shorter working w’eek to accompany the introduction of automatic pelting machines. Representatives of Pacific Freezing, Ltd, met officials of the West Coast (North Island) branch of the union to negotiate an agreement covering Pacific’s new works at Oringi, near Dannevirke. The secretary of the union. Mr Ken Findlay, said yesterday that talks would resume tomorrow at Oringi. The union has made a shorter working week a prerequisite for an agreement for the opening of the $22.5 million works next Monday. Pacific has said that it cannot afford to run on a four-day week basis, and would not bow to union pressure.
