Timely Arrival gains overdue win at Motukarara

Timely Arrival broke through for an overdue first success when she shaded Stewardess in the Thelma Memorial Stakes at the Akaroa Trotting Club’s meeting at Motukarara yesterday. Timely Arrival was sent to the front by Colin de Filippi with 1700 m left and she was hard pressed near the end by Stewardess, which received a lucky run along the rails for Michael de Filippi. There was a head between the pair at the line, with a length and a half back to Kaydee, which did well after being sent to a break near the 900 m and checking Love Song. The second favourite, Prime Advice, had little in her favour arid was a useful fourth, ahead of Slalom. Timely Arrival is raced in partnership by Messrs Jack Newton and Terry Davidson, who hold her on lease from Mr Bill Dickson, of West Melton. Colin Newton trains Timely Arrival at West Melton. A four-year-old mare by Timely Knight from Bomber Sal, she nearly died as a young horse, suffering from a severe attack of colic. She underwent an operation and it was discovered she had a twisted bowel. “She’s a tough nut and has taken a long time to get over that operation. Stakes. He bred Joy Boy and races him in partnership with his father-in-law, Mr Dave Cotton, of Christchurch. Joy Boy overcame a check inside the last 800 m to wear down Scotty Del and win by a head. He is trained at Rangiora by Bob Nyhan and is a promising type of gelding by Boyden Hanover from Joyeuse, a useful winner some years ago when trained by the late Cecil Donald. Prebbleton, and as well as Timely Arrival and Joy Boy he" has bred Albuquerque, a grand winner in North America, and Tahitian Dancer, which won at her first four starts in Perth.
