River protection ‘inadequate’

PA Wellington Recreation and conservation organisations say they are seriously concerned about rivers protection legislation which has been introduced by the Government. The groups, all members of the Save the Rivers campaign, believe that the changes proposed to the Water and Soil Conservation Act are “completely inadequate" and have only a

limited role to play in protecting New Zealand’s best wild and scenic rivers. The chairman of the campaign committee, Mr Tony Brunt, said that the groups had authorised a joint statement, which noted: “Legislation should be sought which clearly asserts that many of our remaining wild and scenic rivers will definitely be preserved for future generations. "We have lost, and are

losing, so many to damming and other development projects that the scales have to be put right in no uncertain manner. “This proposed legislation does not do that.” The groups want a special rivers act appointing a wild and scenic rivers authority serviced by the Lands and Survey Department. “The Ministry of Works is too development-oriented,” Mr Brunt said.
