Visiting South Africans

Sir,—A. A. Tarr questions HART’s picketing of the I.U.C.N. assembly and earlier the Angus Breeders’ conference. It is important to realise that most, if not all, of the South African delegates are representatives of State agencies. It is also significant that HART has found a high degree of support for its actions from both New Zealand and overseas delegates at the conference. It is HART policy to oppose all sporting, cultural and trading contact with racist South Africa. This extends to both conservationists and farmers. Cjommander Barnard, the Angus breeder, stood for Parliament in the New Republic Party, which believes in a confederation of independant states in South Africa — suspiciously similar to apartheid. While here, he not only made a number of statements which indicated that he was pro-tour, but also made the standard "blacks play soccer,” and “sport is fully integrated” statements. Clearly he was a legitimate target for an antiapartheid picket.—Yours, etc.. JOHN EDMUNDSON. October 14. 1981.
