Night of entertainment
The Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s first on-course totalisator meeting of the season at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Friday evening is certain to start- with a bang? A fireworks display is one.of many extra attractions planned for the evening. ’ - The feature race for. dogs will be the class 5 event over 560 m at 8.45 p.m.'and that will precede another feature race involving two-legged runners.
A charity race worth $750 will be held over 500 m with eight teams of four runners. Five, rugby clubs, twa rugby league clubs and an All Stars Celebrity team will be lured to the track to chase, prize money for their selected charities. The first three runnershave to.cover- lOOrn and the anchor,man has a dash of 200 m. The celebrity; team in running order is,3aß's Alison McConnachie, Rodney Bryant (Television New Zealand),
John Cardwell (3ZB) and Bruce Hunter, a former All Black and sprint champion. The teams and their nominated charities are: Linwood Rugby Club (Hope Children's fund); Christchurch Rugby Club (St Johns Ambulance); Marist Rugby Club (St Johnof God Children’s Home); New Brigthon Rugby Club (Freeville School); Papanui Rugby League Club (Harewood Road Methodist Children’s Home); Sydenham Rugby Club (Sydenham -Primary School); Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Club (Plunket Society);; Celebrity team (1.H.C.). The race will be called by, Ken Anderson; and all teams a will receive some prize money. The Christchurch club, in what is its biggest promotion, has organised a marching display, a lolly scramble, an Afghan race and a display of Woodford Glen stockcars as part of its programme of entertainment.
