Breast prostheses benefit extended
PA Wellington The Government had extended the breast prostheses benefit to all women who had had a mastectomy, said the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) yesterday. This year's Budget increased the initial breast prostheses benefit from $3O to $4O and extended it so that a benefit of $4O a year is payable in respect of replacement prostheses. Previously, eligibility has been confined to those who had a mastectomy since July 29, 1976, the date on which the initial breast prostheses benefit was introduced. In addition, women who had a mastectomy overseas have not until now been eligible for the replacement benefit. “The abolition of the 1976 qualifying date will bring the benefit into line with other benefits for artificial aids which are provided according to need,” said Mr Gair.
