Unemployed seals sold to Aust.
PA Rotorua Five unemployed Mount Maunganui seals have joined the drift to Australia. The seals have sailed from the port of Tauranga aboard the Marama on the first leg of their journey to a marineland at Coff’s Harbour, 500 km north of Sydney. The New Zealand fur seals, Reg. Sam, and Willy, and the Californian sea lions. Dusty and Flipper, have performed at Marineland over the last 10 years.
The owner of Marineland, Mr Peter Sorrenson, said he had tried to sell the animals in New Zealand but there were no takers. The animals were a loss to New Zealand because there were few in captivity in the country. He would accompany them to their new home. Marineland was now wound up and would become a “marine recreation park" — opening later this year — complete with bumper boats, mini golf and a water slide.
