NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States has expressed reservations about a joint declaration of support by France and Mexico for Leftist guerrillas fighting the United States-backed junta in El Salvador. The State Department spokesan said the United States would “clearly regard it as regrettable" if the declaration encouraged Leftists not to participate in elections in El Salvador next March. France and Mexico announced last week they were recognising the alliane of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front and the Revolutionary Democratic Front as a ’ "representative political force".in El Salvador. The former is the main Leftist guerilla group and the other group is its political arm. The Leftists are trying to overthrow the junta. The American Secretary of State (Mr Alexander Haig) said on Friday the United States was considering political, economic, and security measures to aid the junta against the guerrillas. ’ The State Department spokesman said yesterday the United States hoped allgroups willing to renounce violence would choose to particpate in El Salvador’s’ political process.
