Maori unemployed ‘a disaster’
PA Wellington The level of Maori unemployment has been called a “social disaster of monumental proportions" by the chairman of the Labour Party’s Maori Policy Council, Mrs Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan. ■ In an address to the Mental Health Symposium she said the continued lack of research and practical action showed there was only political apathy about a situation in which half the young Maoris in New’ Zealand could be unemployed. The Government should move to compile accurate information on the true state of Maori unemployment and should ensure that young •Maoris received help in getting jobs.
i Programmes such as Tu Tangata w’ere only "first laid.”- she said.
