Awacs assurances
Saudi Arabia has secretly accepted strict conditions that would limit the capabilities of the five Awacs radar detection planes which it plans to buy from the United States. “Newsweek" magazine reports. The reported conditions are apparently intended to prevent the Saudis from using the planes to spy on Israel, and so mollify the Israelis as well as opponents of the sale in Congress, which has yet to approve the deal. “Newsweek” quoted one official as saying Washington could “pull the plug” on the Awacs if the conditions were violated. “Newsweek” said the stumbling block was that none of the assurances had been put in writing.—New York.
