PA Wellington A group of anti-Springbok tour demonstrators plans to lodge a formal complaint about police action near Athletic Park. The protesters yesterday produced statements asserting that demonstrators were “attacked" by baton-wielding police without warning after they had been encouraged to walk up Rintoul Street past the police. . ~.. Eleven persons say they heard the commander of the police Red Squad order his
men to fall back and allow two groups of demonstrators to link up. Statements shown to reporters yesterday allege that the police withdrew to one side of Rintoul Street and then attacked the demonstrators . as the two protesting groups moved towards each other. The statements were signed by two Wellington solicitors, Mr Keith Matthews and Mrs Margaret Lee: an economist. Mr
Dennis Rose: a university lecturer. Mrs Jacqueline Matthews; a public relations consultant. Mr Bevan Burgess, and Mrs Ariadne Burgess: a retired teacher, Mr Douglas Edmonds: a teacher. Mrs Ailsa Barton: a psychiatrist, Dr Anne Hall; and a retired headmaster. Mr Hector McVeagh: and Mrs Mabel McVeagh. The statements will be used to support the formal complaint.
