Skybus Viscount delayed

Pa Auckland The first Skybus Viscount airliner, due to arrive from Britain late last week, has been delayed for at least a week by a work-permit dispute. According to a spokesman for Skybus, New Zealand House in London has declined to provide work permits for five pilots who were to fly the aircraft to New Zealand.

The pilots — three captains and two flying officers employed by British Air Ferries — include two New Zealanders.

A spokesman for Skybus, Mr Derek Little, said telegrams had been sent to all Government Ministers asking for an explanation. The airline had also been in touch with the Minister of Immigration (Mr Malcolm), who denied there was any attempt to stop the pilots coming to New Zealand. The dispute with New Zealand House in London is being handled by British Air Ferries’ marketing manager, Mr Jerry Keegan.

It is believed that Mr Keegan was told the pilots could fly the Viscount to Auckland, but would then have to return to Britain immediately.
