‘Open government’ policy not exploited?

PA - Wellington The news media have not taken advantage of the Justice Department’s new "open government” policy, according to the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay). Since February, he said only four times had information been supplied that would not have been supplied previously. Asked in Parliament by Mr G. W. F. Palmer (Labour, Christchurch Central) what requests have been received by the news media, Mr McLay said there had been very little change in the pattern of inquiries since the new policy.

“The department particularly took the view that it was disappointing that the news media had not found a need to seek more information under the new policy.” said Mr McLay. “According to the department, there may be ignorance of what information is available, and the department is identifying means of ensuring that all people who might be interested can make the appropriate inquiries.” Mr McLay also said his department was compiling a bibliography of information available under the new policy.
