Tax on machines?

Sir.—More and more money is being paid as benefits to those who cannot find employment or choose not to work. Should this money come from higher taxes on those who do work,- and are already overtaxed, or should it come from a major cause of the unemployment, i.e. new and ever more efficient person replacing

machines? Why not put an hour meter on these machines in the same way that mileage meters on trucks fix road tax. so that these machines which relieve persons of employment are taxed in various amounts per hour, depending on employee units lost, to contribute to a fund for the unemployed. This tax must not, of course, be so high as to discourage the purchase of the machine. We must remain productively competitive on the world market. These meters would also ensure large companies contributed a fairer share of total tax revenue.—Yours, etc., LES LINKLATER. August 18, 1981.
