Cyclists to use tunnel to port
Wellington reporter
The Canterbury Cyclists’ Association has received permission to hold its annual spring cycle event through the Lyttelton road tunnel on September 6. Permission was given by the National Roads Board even though the association had not applied within the 42-day minimum rule. No problem had resulted from a similar event last year, the chief .highways engineer, Mr EL J. Burt, told the board. -f-
The' morning trip from Christchurch, to a picnic on Lyttelton Harbour, “ had needed ; a closing of only eight minutes,-delaying about 50 vehicles at each' end of the tunnel.
But the return ’ trip, slightly uphill, had required a 15-minute closing, “some cyclists having been reduced to walking the latter part of the trip, Mr Burt said. This had delayed more than 260 vehicles at the Heathcote approach and 50 at the Lyttelton end.
